Chiang Mai is the economic heart of Northern Thailand and Thailand’s second largest city. It’s a far cry from Bangkok’s hustling and bustling. Because of its fresh and peaceful atmosphere, it is known as the “Northern Rose.” Chiang Mai, the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, has a lovely, traditional ambiance.
Inside and beyond the ancient city, there are numerous charming and lovely temples. The grand and beautiful Northern Thai-style pagodas are home to modest and kind monks who are glad to speak with guests.
Along the criss-crossed streets, there are numerous shops full of one-of-a-kind finds, as well as restaurants, coffee shops, and massage parlors. The vibrant night markets are a fascinating feature that is popular with tourists.

Chang Mai is the largest city in northern Thailand and the capital of Chiang Mai Province. It is 700 km (435 mi) north of Bangkok near the highest mountains in the country, including Doi Inthanon. Chiang Mai was founded in 1296 as the new capital of Lan Na, succeeding the former capital, Chiang Rai. The city’s strategic location on the Ping River and its proximity to major trading routes contributed to its historic importance.
